The design for Sunset Industrial Marketplace draws from the Industrial Heritage of the area in which it is situated. Sunset Park is a vibrant industrial and residential neighborhood in southwest Brooklyn. The site is located near the waterfront surrounded by light manufacturers and other industrial businesses, and is close to public transit. The proposed buildings, in both program and architectural character, relate to the area’s industrial past and present.
Sunset Industrial Marketplace aims to preserve New York City’s industrial architectural fabric by protecting and reusing the existing Federal Building No. 2 while featuring its industrial users. The design draws from successful examples of other industrial reuse projects such as Dia:Beacon in Beacon, NY and the Tate Modern in London. The mixed-use aspect of the project will help to invigorate the area light-industrial and help to revitalize the area at large. This will broaden the cultural landscape and add to its diversity.
The proposal is made up of two main components. The rehabilitation of the existing Federal Building No. 2 for use as light industrial space on seven floors with an industrial showroom, a retail tenant, and a marketplace for multiple vendors on the ground floor. A new building will contain retail and parking to complement the light industrial across the street.
