The design of the audio post house located in Union Square exemplifies Raya Ani’s iconoclastic sensibility. Instead of dull, square rooms typically associated with sound studios, RAW-NYC envisioned an open and casual space filled with light. It was also a priority to create rooms where clients would linger and feel at home. In response to these needs, RAW-NYC came up with an “elevated park” design, capitalizing on the audio post house’s perch looking down on Union Square Park.
“We brought the neighborhood’s energy into the space, approaching it like an ‘elevated park’, using only natural colors, textures and lots of natural light. The individual suites’ pod-shape design was inspired by sculptures from the park itself, and they are fashioned like intimate living rooms. The pods do not share walls to optimize on sound quality while achieving the feel of a structure in a park. The design and the function worked well together to give it its spatial quality while allowring light to filter in.
To match Sonic Union’s park theme, sustainable, environmental friendly materials were used on almost the entire facility: Low-wall partitions were filled with Kirei board panels made from reclaimed agricultural fiber; floors in the entire space were restored to its original wooden grandeur (while) except for the mix rooms whose floors used bamboo for acoustical purposes); and all the desks for the mix rooms were custom-made with reclaimed timber from a 150-year old barn.
