The redevelopment of the George Washington Bridge Bus Station presents a complex and intriguing design challenge that encompasses a redevelopment of a whole city block that spans over the trans-Manhattan expressway.
The George Washington Bridge Bus Station is New York City’s northern hub for surface transit commuters from northern New York, New jersey and Pennsylvania. It facilitates inter-modal transfer, drawing commuters through the neighborhood from the city.
The Terminal is comprised of two buildings: ‘West building’ is the current bus terminal operation, located between 178th street and 179th street and between Broadway and Fort Washington Avenue. ‘East building’ is a floorless superstructure located between Broadway and Wadsworth Avenue with commuter parking on the roof. The two buildings are joined by two roadway bridges across Broadway, approximately 29 feet above grade. The bridge allows buses entering the terminal headed east from George Washington Bridge to circulate on the roof level and to exit west back onto the bridge. There is an existing commuter parking on the roof level that serves New York Presbyterian/ Columbia Medical Center and Columbia University.
